The Memory Keeper's Daughter

If there's one thing that will tear families apart and destroy a perfectly good relationship, it is lies. You may think that you have everyone bluffed, but you will understand that the only person you are bluffing is yourself.

Lying not only destroys relationships, it is a very tiring thing too. You are constantly worried that someone will see through your lie. So you use another lie to cover up for your previous lie and so on and so forth, until it explodes.

This book, The Memory Keeper's Daughter, is an excellent example of what a lie can do to what would have been a perfectly happy family.

It should have been an ordinary birth, the start of an ordinary happy family. But the night Dr David Henry delivers his wife's twins is a night that will haunt five lives for ever.

For though David's son is a healthy boy, his daughter has Down's syndrome. And, in a shocking act of betrayal whose consequences only time will reveal, he tells his wife their daughter died while secretly entrusting her care to a nurse.

As grief slowly tears apart David's family, so a little girl must make her own way in the world as best as she can.

That's completely true, I essentially live a lie, a lie for my parents, and a lie for my friends. It can destroy relationships, and I already know that they won't be impressed if they find out. But, there's no way forward for me right now, I need to think about things...
